DAY 01 - Monday, May 8:

We meet at the Braithwaite Community Centre for a private transfer to Horseshoe Bay to catch the 10:30 am ferry, arriving in Nanaimo Bay around 12:05 pm. Our naturalist leader, Bill Merilees, will meet the group at the ferry dock . A short 25 minute, scenic drive north brings us to Fairwinds Schooner Cove Resort and Marina where we enjoy our first lunch together.
After lunch we continue on the scenic drive to Qualicum falls for an easy walk around the canyon trail. We proceed to MacMillan Provincial Park to walk amongst the giant trees at Cathedral Grove.
Our return to Nanaimo takes us via Coombs market, formally known as “Billy Goats on the roof”.
Dinner tonight is at the Tyne-Mara Resort in Parksville.
Overnight in Nanaimo at the Bestwestern Dorchester Hotel. Lunch and Dinner.

DAY 02 - Tuesday, May 9:
We take a mid-morning ferry to Newcastle Island for a leisurely walk on some excellent forest trails. We visit the CPR Pavilion, the destination of the 1930’s and 1940’s cruise from downtown Vancouver . You will get the opportunity to read about Newcastle Island prior to your trip as a copy of Bill’s book “Newcastle - a place of discovery” is included in the package when you participate on this trip. In the late afternoon we take the ferry back to Nanaimo and dinner tonight will be on our own.
At 7 pm Bill will guide us on a walkabout at Buttertubs, a wetland park in the middle of Nanaimo known for water fowl and birds. This is an easy 2.2 km walk and is optional.
Overnight at the Bestwestern Dorchester Hotel. Breakfast and Lunch

DAY 03 - Wednesday, May 10:
After an early breakfast at our hotel, we catch the 8:25 am ferry to Gabriola Island where we visit the Petrigliphs at the United Church site and also the Malaspina Gallery (a unique sandstone formation discovered by the Spaniards in 1992). The site of the Pulpstone quarry on Gabriola Island is another place of interest that we will visit. Finally we stop at the Whitehart Pub for lunch and take the early afternoon ferry back to Nanaimo to connect to the 3:00 pm ferry to Horseshoe Bay and a private transfer back to Braithwaite Community Centre.
